Italian Lakes - Lake Orta

When people think of the Italian Lakes, it is all too often Garda, Maggiore and Como that spring to mind, rather than Lago d'Orta, the little gem of a lake hidden away behind Lake Maggiore. This is real Italy, and you can step back in time in the little lakeside villages. The town of Orta San Giulio has attractive baroque buildings, and is compact and easy to explore. Opposite the little square in the centre of the town is the island of San Giulio, with its ancient basilica and 15th century frescoes. Above Orta is the amazing Sacro Monte with a Franciscan Monastery and outstandingly beautiful views of the lake and island. Many places can be reached from Lake Orta - the Mottarone mountain with superb views of seven lakes, the resort of Stresa on Lake Maggiore, the Val Vigezzo, the Villa Taranto with exotic flowers and trees, and many, many more wonderful places. If you like the lakes, but prefer somwhere a little quieter than the larger lakes, Orta is ideal. But beware! You may well fall in love with the place...
